Yenagoa—The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri has described cattle rearing as a private business, which states have power to regulate.
He made this known in a live programme on Channels Television, when he was restating the position of the Southern Governors Forum.
He emphasized that there was no going back on the ban on open grazing in Bayelsa state, pointing out that the system is no longer sustainable.
His Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah quoted him as saying:
“The issue of cattle grazing is a commercial, private activity. I do not see why we needed anybody’s opinion to regulate a private activity. We have a duty to protect our people. That is why we have state assemblies.”
Governor diri added that, “in Bayelsa it already came into effect since March 11, 2021. Open grazing is no longer sustainable. We need to stop it.”
