Next Nigerian President should come from the South, says Southern Governors

…set 1st September 2021 as timeline for promulgation of anti-open grazing law

Lagos—Governors from Southern Nigeria, under the umbrella of Southern Governors Forum, Monday met in Lagos state to review the situation of the country.

The meeting which took place at the Lagos State Government House was convened to review the current security situation, constitutional amendment as well as the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) recently passed by the National Assembly.

In a communique signed by the Forum’s Chairman who is also the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and peaceful coexistence of the country.

They pointed out that, for fairness and equity, the next President of Nigeria should emerge from Southern Nigeria.

The governors who commiserated with families of slain securing operatives, re-echoed the need for state police.

The Forum reviewed the security situation in the country and commended security operatives for their relentless efforts in restoring security and safety.”

The governors also commiserated with families and loved ones of those who have fallen in the line of duty.

On the issue of open grazing the governors agreed to “set a timeline of Wednesday, 1st September 2021 for the promulgation of the anti-open grazing law in all Member States.”

They also rejected the “proposed 3% and support the 5% share of the oil revenue to the host community as recommended by the House of Representatives” in the petroleum industry bill.

While rejecting “the proposed 30% share of profit for the exploration of oil and gas in the basins, “they also rejected the “ownership structure of the proposed Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

In the communique, the governors also rejected “the removal of the Electronic transmission of the election result from the electoral act; as well as the confirmation of exclusive jurisdiction in pre-election matters on the Federal High Court.”
