80-year-old military retiree to participate in marathon race organised by lawmaker

Brass—According to Leadership Newspaper, Nathaniel Reuben Tom-Isele, an 80-year-old military retiree is set to join other runners in the 8km Brass-Nembe Unity Marathon race.

The marathon race, which is billed to take place on the 14th of August, 2021, is sponsored by the member representing Brass-Nembe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Israel Sunny-Goli.

The ex-serviceman, who is said to have been cleared and declared medically fit, hails from Okpoama in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Ex-serviceman training for the forthcoming race

This was disclosed by Chief Feliks Sieri, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Unity Marathon, who also hinted that all participants have been medically certified, ahead of the event this Saturday.

The organizers are prepared to receive participants and visitors from Brass and Nembe Local Government Areas, Sieri said.

In his words: ”The hospitable people of Nembe-Brass are set and prepared. Somebody from the approved communities from Nembe and Brass must identify the participants. The age is limitless.

“There is an 80-year-old retired serviceman who was convinced not to participate, but he refused and insisted he will participate. He is already training along the route of the marathon.”

According to him, participants in the event include 200 women and 700 men.

He maintained that three medical doctors, nurses and auxiliary staff and well-equipped ambulances will be on standby.

In the aspect of security, Sieri revealed that conventional security personnel, as well as the Action Committee on Security, will all be on the ground to take care of any security issue.

On his part, Mr. Noel Inafa, Chairman of the Media/Publicity Committee, noted that the race is open to both indigenes and non-indigenes residing in two LGAs.

According to Inafa, the winner of the male category of the competition will go home with N500,000, the second position gets N350,000 and the third position gets N150,000.

While the three top runners in the female category will get N300,000, N200,000 and N100,000 respectively.

Lots of other consolation prizes are also available for the 4-10th position holders from both categories, he added.
