“You’re not his mother”— Nollywood actress tells firstborn daughters to stop caregiving in relationships

Actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola has reflected on relationships, noting that firstborn daughters often assume caregiving roles, which can shape their expectations in romance.

According to her post on Instagram, this can lead to a pattern of over-giving and prioritising others’ needs.

Bolaji emphasised that individuals, especially women, shouldn’t feel obligated to fix everything or everyone in a relationship.

She encouraged them to break free from this cycle and recognise their worth, prioritising being cared for and valued, and by doing so, they can redefine what love looks like and create a more balanced dynamic.

Ogunmola wrote, “As a firstborn daughter, you are used to carrying, you think entering romantic relationships has to be the same, and then you continue the cycle of never knowing what being at ease, BEING Looked after feels like, and then your daughter sees you and also thinks that’s what the representation of love looks like!!!!

“You are not his mother, and you don’t have to fix everything or everyone!!!! Rest.”
