Winners have emerged and talents have been discovered as the maiden edition of the Hon. Daniel Charles Quiz and Spelling Bee competition ended yesterday.
The educational event which is an initiative of Hon. Daniel Charles, the lawmaker representing Brass Constituency I in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, was held at Twon Brass, the headquarters of Brass Local Government Area, from 4th to 6th December.
The three-day event which saw the participation of government schools and government approved private schools within communities in Brass Constituency I included two events—the spelling bee competition which was for Junior Secondary schools and the quiz competition for the Senior Secondary Schools.
Sunny-Goli Memorial School Twon Brass emerged Winner of the Spelling Bee competition winning a N150,000 grand prize, with Community Secondary school (CSS) Twon Brass finishing as first runner-up winning N100,000 and Government Model Secondary School (GMSS) Twon Brass ending up as second runner-up, going home with a reward of N50,000.
In the Quiz competition, Government Model Secondary Secondary (GMSS) Twon Brass emerged winners, going home with the grand prize of N500,000, Sunny-Goli Memorial School Twon Brass finished second with a reward of N300,000; while Community Secondary school (CSS) Egwe-Ama finished third position clinching a reward of N200,000.
Peter Godgift, from GMSS Twon Brass, who emerged the overall best performer in the quiz competition, told newsmen that she was excited to have achieved the feat.
Godgift who was given a monetary reward of N100,000 for her brilliant performance said the competition had exposed her to make friends with people that have the same interest as her.
The competition has also helped me in acquiring a problem-solving skill, she admitted.
She thanked the lawmaker for the opportunity and prayed for God’s blessings on his life.
Similarly, another contestant from Sunny-Goli Memorial School, Twon Brass, Olaoluwa Vivian, said she felt great about the competition, advising fellow students “to take their academics seriously because it can change their lives unexpectedly.”
Mr. Daukoru Liver-Daniel, Secretary of the Twon Brass Community Development Committee (CDC) said the quiz has helped discover talented kids with an untapped potential around communities in the Constituency who are even more knowledgeable than most kids on Television.
According to him, the initiative has given them a platform to prove themselves as well as made their families and communities proud regardless of their position in the quiz competition.
Thanking the lawmaker, he said: “Education is the best legacy you can give to a person, and with this, education is being promoted and his reward is in heaven.”
The first prize for the Quiz competition was given by HRH Samuel Sambo, the Amadabo of Sambo-ama in Twon Brass, while the first prize for the spelling bee competition was made sponsored by HRH Israel Sunny Goli-Kemmer, Amadabo of Kemmer-Ama and a former lawmaker.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the grand finale, the lawmaker thanked HRH Sambo, HRH Kemmer and constituents who attended the educational event.
He also commended the Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund and the Bayelsa State Higher Education Loan Board for partnering with his office to make the competition successful.
Charles said the competition was to promote efficiency in learning, building a strong educational structure and standards amongst secondary school students as well as to unite students across Brass constituency I.
