The 7th Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has extended its heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the victims of the Eleme fire incident, which occurred on Friday night, at the Aleto Eleme section of the East-West road in Rivers State.
The Representative of Rivers State on the NDDC Board, Chief Tony Okocha made the statement on behalf of the Commission during a Media Briefing in his Office at the Rivers State NDDC Office in Port Harcourt.
According to the Vanguard, he commiserated with the victims of the tragedy which resulted in the loss of lives and property worth billions of naira.
Okocha prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident and assured that NDDC will provide necessary assistance to ameliorate the effects of the incident on victims.
Okocha, who also spoke on behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State, cautioned truck drivers plying that route to always drive with caution, considering the nature of the road, which is undergoing expeditious construction work.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi for the quality and standard of the job that is being done on the East-West road.
The tanker fire incident killed scores of people and burnt over 100 vehicles beyond repairs.
The inferno sparked a renewed call for the speedy completion of reconstruction work on the east/west which has spanned over sixteen years since it commencement during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
