Former NIMASA Boss urges Wike to adopt old drainage plan to curb flooding

"Our people are traumatized; a lot of persons are displaced, we have lost several goods and properties estimated at over N3bn, social and economic life has been disrupted because the state government slept off, our people are suffering." ~ Dakuku Peterside

Port Harcourt—A former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside, has urged Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to adopt the drainage master plan put in place by the previous administration to curb flooding in the state.

Peterside, in a statement on Wednesday, stated the people of the state had suffered untold hardship due to the effects of flooding, Daily Trust reports.

He said the drainage plan was already in place and being implemented by the Chibuike Ameachi’s administration before its end.

According to him, the people of the state are vulnerable to flooding because the government in power is sleeping on duty.

He said: “Former Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s administration had put in place a drainage master plan for the city of Port Harcourt and was already being executed before he handed over office in 2015, but was abandoned by Governor Wike for political reasons.

“Our people are traumatized; a lot of persons are displaced, we have lost several goods and properties estimated at over N3bn, social and economic life has been disrupted because the state government slept off, our people are suffering.”
