Yenagoa—Comrade Alagoa Morris, Programme Manager/Head, Niger Delta Resource Centre at the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA) has been conferred the 2023 Human Rights Advocate award.
The award was presented to him by the Chief Executive officer of Seledo Foundation, Mr. Tarilayefa Erebila in his office.
Mangrovepen.ng gathered that the foundation honoured Morris to show appreciation for his contribution towards the protection of the environment and human rights.
Morris, in his remarks, dedicated the award to rural dwellers who support environmental sustainability concepts and those who suffer from environmental degradation.
He also dedicated the award to community folks who are victims of oil politics induced violence in the Ijaw nation in particular and Niger Delta region in general.
Morris while thanking the foundation for finding him worthy of the award, advised his “colleagues in the field not to relent in their pursuit for environmental and social justice.”
The activist also called on operators of illegal bunkering also known as kpo fire sites to stop as their activities are destroying the environment.
“It is not everyone in a community that is into kpo fire, so you cannot use your activities to destroy the livelihood of others engaging in fishing and farming,” he said.
He decried the inability of the Federal government to license modular refineries “which were supposed to address the issue of Kpo Fire.”
