Flood: two-year-old child drowns in Bayelsa community

Yenagoa—A two-year-old child has drowned in Ogbogoro community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, mangrovepen.ng has gathered.

The incident which happened on Wednesday morning has thrown the community into a state of mourning.

“Just this morning, 12th October 2022 in Ogbogoro community a 2-year-old baby drowned in the flood. Efforts were made to save the baby but she give up.

“Water from the Ikoli river is entering into Ogbogoro community due to land receding caused by erosion,” an indigene of the community, Ada Gwegwe revealed to our reporter via telephone.

Gwegwe further revealed that a middle-aged lady also lost her life on Tuesday while sleeping when erosion swept her house away.

It will be recalled that before the emergence of the flood, the community has been battling erosion for months which has led to the loss of lands, houses and properties worth millions of naira.

The Bayelsa State Government had promised to intervene through a canalization project to stall the erosion but the work has been stalled without any explanation.
