Okowa signs anti-open grazing bill into law

Asaba—Delta State Governor, Sen Ifeanyi Okowa, has signed the Delta State Livestock, Breeding, Rearing, and Marketing Regulation Bill 2021 into law.

According to a report by Dailyreport Nigeria, Okowa also assented to the Delta State Urban and Regional Planning Bill 2020.

The bills were presented to the governor by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Ocho, Clerk of the House, Lyna Ocholor, Esq and other principal officers of the legislature.

Delta has now joined the likes of Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Enugu and Ondo states to criminalize open grazing.

The enactment of the anti-open grazing law is in line with the resolution of the Southern Governors Forum, which had unanimously agreed to ban open grazing to end the clashes between farmers and herders.

Meanwhile, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has already dumped the open grazing system in Ondo State for the feedlot system introduced by the state government as an alternative.
