There is a silent educational revolution ongoing in Bayelsa—Diri’s aide

Yenagoa—All 72 programmes in the Niger Delta University (NDU) were recently accredited by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and the Bayelsa State School of Nursing upgraded to College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The technical adviser to Governor Douye Diri on student affairs, Austin Adigio has lauded the state government for the critical role it played in making it possible.

In a chat with mangrovepen.ng, Adigio described the efforts of the government in the educational sector as a silent revolution.

He particularly commended the governor for the proactive steps he has taken since assuming office.

He said: “Until now, several courses in NDU were not accredited and as a result, students were unable to enroll in the school to study these courses.

“The attention of the governor was drawn to the problem and immediately he did all that was necessary and today we’re proud to say all 72 courses offered in the state institution have all been fully accredited.

“This I see as a very proactive step by Governor Douye Diri who is poised to change the educational narrative of the State.”

Adigio also lauded the government for its efforts in the upgrade of the school of nursing to a college of nursing and midwifery.

According to him, with the upgrade students who graduate from the school can now be gainfully employed.

“Our students from that institution would be gainfully employed with the certificates from the school after graduation. This was not the case before now.”

The technical adviser maintained that the state government has shown its readiness in empowering Bayelsans educationally with the accreditation of courses in NDU and the upgrade of the School of Nursing.

The Diri-led administration has been deliberate with its action to position and prepare students for a post-hydro-carbon era which he said is going to be a knowledge-driven economy, he said.

While calling on students in Bayelsa and beyond to take advantage of the new development, he assured them that Bayelsa remains safe and hospitable.

In his words: “We call on prospective students from all parts of the region and by extension the country to take advantage of the accredited courses.

“The state is safe, the people are hospitable and of course the Amassoma community where the university is situated is now hosting to our brand new airport which has made transportation easy.

“Bayelsa offers peace, the universities offer full accredited courses, so we call on the parents and their wards to make good use of the opportunity and get ready for the future ”

Adigio also thanked the deputy governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, commissioner of education, Gentle Emelah and management of the institutions for their role in making the accreditation process a success.
