Buhari-led government unfair to many Nigerians, Tompolo insists

…calls on fellow ex-agitators to exercise restraint

Warri, Delta State — Former Niger Delta warlord, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo, has described the actions of the Buhari-led federal government as unfair.

The former ex-agitator, in a statement he personally signed and obtained by Mangrovepen.ng, said that he reluctantly accepted the outcome of the consultative meeting regarding his earlier ultimatum for the federal government to constitute the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

He noted that, since then, he has done so much to keep peace in the oil-rich region, which is known to some security stakeholders.

“I have been in constant touch with my fellow agitators in the region to give peace a chance, knowing fully well that there cannot be any meaningful development in an atmosphere of rancor and acrimony,” Tompolo hinted.

According to him, “Government must be sincere in handling developmental issues in the Niger Delta region as the people have suffered enough, being neglected for several decades,” because of the prevailing sentiments owning to government’s attitude in the region.

He called on ex-agitators in the Niger Delta to “avoid anything that may throw the only relatively peaceful region in the country now into chaos because of governments nonchalant attitude towards the security and welfare of its citizenry as constitutionally provided.”

Tompolo pointed out that government must create an enabling environment for all citizens, arguing that the average citizen provides everything for himself.

He insisted that, “The average Nigerian citizen is a government of his or her own as the citizens provides everything for themselves today.

“The government is unfair to a greater number of its citizens. The Nigerian Government must create an enabling environment for the citizens to live a prosperous and peaceful life.”

Tompolo accused multinational oil companies operating in the region for being part of the “conspiracy in the marginalization of the region” and “operating under the cover of the Nigerian Military” to cause disaffection between host communities.

Mangrovepen.ng recalls that Tompolo had issued a seven-day ultimatum directing the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to inaugurate a substantive board of the NDDC by the end of June.

The ultimatum was backed by other ex-agitators in the region. And as a means of solving the impasse, Akpabio held a meeting with stakeholders from the region in Oporoza in Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State.

Tompolo on the 5th of June 2021, withdrew his ultimatum, saying he has accepted the outcome of the meeting between the minister of Niger Delta Affairs and stakeholders from the region.
