The people of Liama community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have appealed to the Bayelsa State government led by Senator Douye Diri to restore and rehabilitate the St. Mark Primary School II in the coastal community.
Signed by the Amayanabo of Liama, HRH Christian Stephen Lia II, Youth President, Ebiye Moses, CDC chairman, Meremubio Seimokuma, the appeal was addressed to the Bayelsa State commissioner for education and that of the ministry of works.
The community lamented the deplorable state of the school, adding that it is no longer fit for learning.
The statement partly reads: “We, the people of Liama community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, are compelled to bring to your attention the deplorable and dilapidated state of St. Mark Primary School II, Liama.
“This institution, which is meant to nurture the minds of our children, has been left to decay, and we can no longer remain silent.
“The school’s infrastructure is in a state of ruin, with cracked walls, leaking roofs, and broken furniture.
“The basic amenities are lacking. This environment is not conducive for learning and poses a significant risk to the health and safety of our children.”
The community therefore appealed to the Bayelsa State Government “to intervene in this matter and provide the necessary support to restore St. Mark Primary School II, Liama, to its former glory.”
It further urged the government to renovate the school’s infrastructure, including classrooms, furniture, and playgrounds and provide clean water and sanitation facilities.
“Ensure that our children have access to a safe and conducive learning environment,” they stated.
While they maintained that it is the responsibility of government to provide the necessary infrastructure and support for citizens to access quality education, the community further expressed the hope that the state government will take immediate action to address the “pressing” issue.
