Be patient with NDDC on internship scheme, Ijaw youths call for calm

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Central Zone, led by Comr. Perekosufa Ineife, has appealed to stakeholders and youths in the Niger Delta to be patient with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) regarding the commission’s youth internship scheme.

The IYC also condemned accusations by the Society for the Welfare of Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (SMUYN) against the NDDC on the reported delay in the commencement of the scheme.

In a statement by its information officer, Comr. Ginah Williams Ikio on Sunday, the IYC central zone maintained that the Commission is doing its best to kick-start the programme.

While assuring the commission of its support to continue with its programmes and initiatives, the IYC also hailed the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

The youth group added that Ogbuku has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the region.

According to the council, Ogbuku’s commitment is evidenced by his leadership in key initiatives such as the Youth Internship Scheme as well as his engagement with various community development projects.

The statement partly reads, “We reject the unfounded claims that the NDDC has failed to deliver on its promises, It is essential to state that Dr. Ogbuku’s tenure has been characterized by significant progress, including the successful launch of Project HOPE and his role in implementing infrastructure, healthcare, and educational improvements in the Niger Delta.

“His efforts to improve community relations and foster peace in the region through effective conflict resolution mechanisms cannot be overlooked.

“In line with President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ Dr. Ogbuku has worked tirelessly to promote sustainable development and create a better future for the people of the Niger Delta.

“His leadership has been recognized by respected institutions, including the University of Ibadan, which awarded him the title of “Ambassador Extraordinaire” in recognition of his leadership and contributions to regional development.

“The Youth Internship Scheme, a critical initiative designed to provide valuable opportunities for Niger Delta youths, is one of Dr. Ogbuku’s top priorities.

“Contrary to the accusations, the NDDC is working diligently to ensure the effective implementation of this scheme, and we urge stakeholders to be patient as the program rolls out.

“The Ijaw Youth Council Central Zone acknowledges that there have been delays. Our findings reveal that the delays are part of the necessary groundwork to ensure the success and sustainability of the scheme, avoiding the mistakes of previous administrations.”

The youth body called on stakeholders and other organizations in the region to “work together with the NDDC rather than engage in baseless criticisms.

“Constructive engagement and collaboration are the only ways forward for our region, and it is vital that we all support efforts aimed at securing the future of the youth in the Niger Delta.”

It however assured that “the commission’s efforts will lead to the empowerment of our youth and the broader socio-economic development of the region.”
