IYC calls for unconditional release of arrested Rivers lawmaker, chides Wike

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Central Zone has condemned the arrest of Hon. Sokari Goodboy Sokari, a lawmaker in the Rivers State House of Assembly representing Ahoada West Constituency.

In a statement by its Information Officer, Comrade Ginah Williams Ikio, the IYC revealed that the arrest of the lawmaker by loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike in Abuja, is a violation of his rights and an abuse of power.

While demanding his immediate and unconditional release the statement noted that Sokari who is a former assistant secretary of the zone is a dedicated and hardworking representative who has always put the interests of his constituents first.

According to the IYC, “his arrest is a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence him, and we will not stand for it. We call on the authorities to respect the rule of law and release Hon. Sokari immediately.

“The Ijaw Youth Council Central Zone stands in solidarity with Hon. Sokari and will not rest until justice is served. We demand that the Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike takes responsibility for this illegal arrest and ensures that Hon. Sokari is released without further delay.”

The statement urged well-meaning Nigerians to join the zone in condemning “this injustice and standing up for the rights of our leader. Hon. Sokari must be released now.”
