Ikweremadu, wife jailed for organ harvesting plot

London—A UK court has sentenced former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months in prison for an organ trafficking plot, according to the Guardian.

The court also sentenced his wife Beatrice to four years and six months in prison while Dr Obinna Obeta, the doctor who served as a ‘middleman’ in the organ trafficking plot got 10 years, suspending also his medical license.

The Old Bailey convicted Senator Ekweremadu, 60, Beatrice Ekweremadu, 56, and Dr Obeta, 50, for conspiring to exploit a young Nigerian for his kidney, in what has entered the UK record books as the first of such case under modern slavery laws.
