Port Harcourt—The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Okon Effiong, has ordered the arrest of policemen identified in a viral video assaulting a man along the East-West Road of Rivers State.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
A video in which men of the Nigerian police were seen assaulting a man and a woman went viral on social media during the weekend.
In the viral video, one of the policemen was seen physically assaulting a man who was adorned in white and afterward ordered him to get in a car that was parked just by the highway.
But the police boss Yesterday said the command has identified Policemen shown in the viral video harassing and assaulting the unidentified man.
The statement read, “Following the identification of the Policemen shown in a viral video harassing and assaulting an unidentified man at an Elibrada junction, Emohua, the Rivers State Command.
“Commissioner of Police, CP OKon O Effiong, psc(+), fdc, has ordered the immediate arrest of the officers indicated.
“As a defender of human rights, the CP assures members of the public, that the Police Officers will be investigated in line with extant rules underlying the conduct of police personnel; and appropriate sanctions meted accordingly.
“The Command further assures the good people of Rivers State of its unalloyed commitment to promoting the rule of law. People are enjoined to report cases of human rights abuse and infractions.”
