Trial census: Traditional ruler urges Bayelsa community to cooperate with enumerators

Brass—The Amadabo of Sambo Ama in Twon Brass Kingdom of Bayelsa State, HRH Samuel Sambo has urged the people of Twon Brass to cooperate with the functionaries of the National Population Commission (NPC) in the ongoing 2022 Trial Census in the community.

It was gathered that some residents in the community have been unwelcoming to enumerators while seeking inducement before allowing them to be counted in the exercise.

Sambo in a message sent to Mangrovepen.ng via email on Saturday expressed displeasure at the emanating stories of non-cooperation by the people with the census staff.

He said it is shocking to have people avoid being counted in a census exercise for whatever reason, given the importance of the exercise and the developmental prospect it portends for the community.

Sambo said that Brass Local Government Area was privileged to have been selected as the only council area in the south-south geopolitical zone where the trial census is being carried out.

He added that the community must make the most of the opportunity and ensure that all data concerning the community is captured.

According to him, in doing so, the community would be complying with the directive of the federal government while also enabling providing basic data for all sectors in the country including education, population, health, etc.

Sambo further urged the census officials on the field to carry out their duties diligently as expected of them.

He added that they should put the interest of the country first before any other consideration, stating that the success of the whole exercise solely lies in their hands.

Recall that the National Population Commission (NPC) trial census commenced on the 13th of July across six selected states in each of the six geopolitical zones in the country and Abuja, the federal capital territory.

The exercise which is billed to end July 30, 2022, is a ‘dress rehearsal’ to fully assess the preparedness of the commission to conduct the 2023 population and housing census.

The trial census exercise is currently underway in the selected Enumeration Areas (EAs) and Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the states including the capital territory.
