BYSIEC effects change on local govt election timetable, apologizes to Bayelsans

Yenagoa—The Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) has effected a change on the timetable for the conduct of the Local Government Council Elections.

Despite the changes, the commission stated that the election which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 14th May 2022 across the eight Local Government Areas in the State will still hold.

Chairman of BYSIEC, Hon. Ball Oyarede made this known in a press briefing held on Thursday at the commission’s office in Yenagoa, the state capital.

According to him, “however, in view of the apparent conflict of the date of the said Elections with the time table of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), wherein all registered Political Parties are mandated to conduct its primary elections in preparation for the 2023 general elections, the Commission, BYSIEC will effect a minor adjustment on the initial time table for the elections in line with Section 91 (1) of the Bayelsa State Local Government Law, 2000 (as amended), to ensure orderliness.

“To this end, the Commission, BYSIEC will notify the general Public, particularly stakeholders of the new date for the conduct of the Local Government Council Elections, as other activities so far accomplished by Political Parties in line with the earlier timetable and guidelines issued by the Commission remain valid.”

The chairman apologized for all inconveniences arising from the new development.
