Yenagoa — At least one person has been confirmed killed and military personnel injured following an attack on a military checkpoint by suspected militants in Ogboinbiri community at a wellhead operated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) at Seibou oil field in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of Bayelsa State on Sunday.
According to reports by the Leadership, a shootout between the suspected militants and the military personnel providing security to the SPDC workers lasted for about three hours which resulted in the death of one of the militants identified as Rom from Ukparatubo Community in Southern Ijaw.
It was reported that sources within the community said the gunmen attacked the military checkpoint in the early hours of Sunday with about three speed boats.
According to the source, “The soldiers shot dead one of the boys but one of the soldiers was wounded and his rifle taken away. The soldier is identified as Job who is attached to the 13NA.”
Military sources have confirmed the development, insisting that efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen military rifle and arrest the culprits.
However, attempts to get a reaction from the spokesman of the 16 Division of the Nigerian Army in Bayelsa, Captain Victor Odukoya failed.
