Economic hardship: concerned citizen pens open letter to Tinubu

Dear President Tinubu,

I write to you today as a concerned citizen, one among the millions feeling the weight of our country’s current economic challenges, troubles that touch every facet of our daily lives.

I do so with utmost respect for your office and the immense burdens that come with steering our nation through these turbulent times.

In recent times, Nigeria has been grappling with soaring inflation rates, a fact that has not escaped any of us who work daily to provide for our families.

The purchasing power of the common citizen has been dramatically eroded, as the Naira continues to struggle against the US dollar, creating a ripple effect that makes it increasingly difficult for businesses to thrive and for individuals to afford basic necessities.

The oil and gas sector, the cornerstone of our nation’s economy, is no longer the bulwark against fiscal instability it once was.

This is underscored by fluctuating global oil prices, which, coupled with domestic challenges, have undermined the sector’s ability to drive economic growth.

The subsidies that once shielded our populace from the volatilities of the global market are now unsustainable, and the recent price hikes in petroleum products have amplified the cost across the market for commodities.

More distressing, perhaps, is the palpable impact these economic woes have on security. As people struggle to make ends meet, crime rates have climbed, a symptom of the desperation that has taken root among our countrymen and women.

It seems a day does not pass without news of kidnappings, banditry, or communal clashes, reminders that economic hardship often fuels unrest.

Mr. President, the situation calls for urgent and strategic interventions. Long-term economic policies focused on diversifying our economy, stabilizing the Naira, and creating a more conducive environment for foreign and local investment are pivotal.

There is also a pressing need for social safety nets to protect the most vulnerable from the harsh tides of economic downturns.

Moreover, agricultural development and energy diversification present themselves as avenues to be pursued with vigor.

These are sectors that can generate employment, stimulate economic activities in rural and urban areas alike, and reduce our over-reliance on oil revenue.

Your office holds the capacity to influence systematic change, to build coalitions for reform, and to engage with the international community in ways that could bolster our economy.

Strategic partnerships and careful economic diplomacy can attract the investment needed to drive innovation, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth.

I urge you, Mr. President, to consider collaborative efforts with the legislature to introduce policies that can soften economic shocks and usher in a period of recovery and growth.

Transparency in government spending, clear communication of economic policies, and an unwavering commitment to tackling corruption at all levels are necessities for reassuring a populace wary of promises unmet.

Mr. President, we look to you as the captain of this Nigerian ship. In your hands, you have the power to harness the winds of change and steer us toward a brighter tomorrow.

Our collective hope is for an era of prosperity that touches every Nigerian, not just in rhetoric but in the daily lives of every man, woman, and child who calls this great nation home.

We, the people of Nigeria, are ready to support efforts that will improve our country and our fate.

We await the decisive action and leadership that will guide us to the promise of a more stable, prosperous, and secure Nigeria.

Respectfully,

Nimibo Alfred Dienagha (Jnr.)
