Yenagoa—The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Thursday condemned the killing of a youth by a tricycle rider and the reprisal attack that followed the incident in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
A youth who was from the Kpansia axis of Yenagoa was stabbed to death by a tricycle rider allegedly over a N50 tricycle fare.
Mangrovepen.ng gathered that in the events that followed, youths from Kpansia community in Yenagoa in what is believed to be a reprisal attack mobbed the tricycle rider to death and went on to set ablaze some tricycles resulting in chaos in the city.
Reacting to the incident, IYC Spokesman, Ebilade Ekerefe, while condemning what he termed the wanton killing of a youth, called for calm and caution in the state capital.
Ekerefe however said while the IYC as a responsible organization does not encourage jungle justice no matter the provocation, he warned that “there will come a point the people will have no choice but to resort to self-help for their safety.”
The IYC advised the leadership of the Hausa community in Yenagoa to caution their members to desist from any act that will provoke Ijaw people from seeing them as our enemies.
The statement, however, urged youths in the area to not take laws into their hands no matter the provocation as the government has already intervened by imposing a curfew and deploying security personnel in and around the Yenagoa metropolis to quell tension.
