Bayelsa elders condemn killing in Nembe, chide politicians

Yenagoa—The Bayelsa State Elders Council has condemned what it termed ‘politically-motivated killing’ in Nembe Local Government Area of the state.

The council expressed disappointment that the Peace Accord that was signed in the recent past by various political groups in Nembe to engender sustained peace, appears to be ignored.

In a statement by its Chairman, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), immediate past Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State on Friday, the Council stated that political players and actors seem not to have dropped their old habits as they are still bent on continuing in their violent ways to entrench themselves in power at all cost.

The statement reads in part:

“The Council, therefore, respectively call on the State Government and the security agencies to fish out the criminal elements involved in this dastardly act and be made to face the full weight of the law.

“In doing so, political affiliations and filial considerations should not come into play as human life is more important than any other factor. We, however, commend the security agencies for bringing the situation under control for now.

“Certainly, Nembe Local Government Area has experienced and suffered enough violence in the guise of playing politics, which the people can no longer tolerate.

“We, the elders of the State trust that decisive action shall be taken to maintain law and order to enable people to vote for candidates of their choice peacefully during the coming elections in all our communities in the State.”

The elders also charged Diri to direct the traditional rulers in the state to be more proactive in dealing with the issue of security in their domains.
