Nembe oil spill: residents report fresh leak from OML 29

Nembe—Residents of Nembe in Bayelsa State have reported a fresh oil spill at Oil Mining Lease, OML, 29 in Santa Barbara River months after the November 1st,2021 spill.

According to reports by Vanguard newspaper, the alleged leak, which originated from a ruptured pipeline from Nembe Flow Station 4 near Ogbolomabiri, has been discharging crude into the creeks and river.

James Karibo, a fisherman and an indigene of Nembe, who operates in the area, lamented the reoccurrence of the spill, after an earlier leak from the facility which lasted for more than a month before it was contained.

Chief Ebinabo Waribo, a chief in Opu-Nembe, also confirmed the incident to Vanguard, expressing regrets that the company had yet to respond to the leak.

Mr. Ndianabasi Matthew, the spokesperson for Aiteo Group, was yet to respond to requests for comments.

Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company is an indigenous firm that acquired OML 29 for $2.4 billion following divestment by Shell Petroleum Development Company in 2015.
