Nembe—A team of environmental experts from Lyniton Nigeria Limited, an indigenous environmental company, has concluded the collection of samples from impacted sites of the oil spill that occurred at OML 29, Well 1, in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Mangrovepen.ng gathered that the committee spent 3 days in the creeks and visited over 66 communities and fishing settlements covered in the Post Impact Assessment (PIA).
Medical personnel in the committee were said to have also provided light reliefs and conducted medical tests on the elderly in areas worse hit by the spill.
President of the Opu-Nembe Youth Federation, Mr. Moses Ayerite, while speaking with newsmen after the exercise, commended Lyniton Nigeria Limited for undertaking what he described as a transparent PIA and Environmental Remediation Report (ERR).
“About 15 youths in Nembe-Bassambiri were recruited as either tour guides or local helpers for the exercise to assist the team to navigate the impacted communities.
“I have confidence that they will do a great job because of their openness and way of communicating with stakeholders which shows their level of experience and maturity in doing things,” he said.
Also speaking, a member of the committee representing an impacted community, Mr. Kuro Iworigha stated that “this Lyniton Limited people are very organized, if they are the same people that will handle the cleanup, I’m sure we will all be happy.
Speaking in Pidgin English, Iworigha also expressed that “this Aiteo people don turn turn us too much, but these people sabi their work very well.”
Speaking on behalf of the company, Dr. A. T. Edokpa, stated that the committee is willing to cooperate and work with the 11-man technical committee inaugurated by the Bayelsa State Government on Wednesday.
He revealed that the report of the baseline studies will be ready before the end of December 2021.
