Bayelsa community benefit from free NYSC medical outreach

Sampou—Residents of Sampou community in Kolokuma/Opokuma local government Area of Bayelsa state on Monday benefited from a free medical outreach by members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), leadership newspaper reports.

The NYSC Director, Brig Gen. Shuiabu Ibrahim, who flagged off the one-week free health care programme tagged Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) in Sampou community, said the programme is being carried out across all the local government areas of the federation.

He said the medical outreach is one of the scheme’s corporate social responsibilities, aimed at giving back to the rural populace for their support to the scheme.

According to the DG, the programme specially targeted the rural populace to enable those who cannot afford the cost of hospital bills and purchase of drugs to freely benefit from enhanced health.

He added that the programme will complement the existing rural health programmes of the Federal, States and Local Governments.

The State Coordinator, Mrs. Ojugo Elizabeth Iyowuna, who represented the Director-General, also noted that the programme would allow the rural populace to access quality medical checkups and treatment as well as referral services.

In his welcome address, the Paramount Ruler of the Sampou community, represented by Chief Alfred Chapman Odon, who is the deputy chief of the community, thanked the NYSC for choosing the community for the programme.

He urged members of the community to take part in the programme.

Sampou community is the ancestral home of the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri.
