Bayelsa engineers okay culvert construction work in Yenagoa, call for calm

Yenagoa—The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Yenagoa Branch has called for calm following claims of presumed unprofessional work being executed at the ongoing expansion works on the Isaac Boro Expressway, particularly the bridge to be constructed at Etegwe, near the Tombia roundabout.

The NSE noted that the claim is that a culvert is being constructed instead of a bridge.

In a statement by Engr. Sokari James Karimo, Yenagoa Branch Chairman/CofC South-South, on Monday, the NSE stated that the claim is being made by some high-ranking members of the public who are not necessarily engineers themselves.

“As a noble Society who are partners and critical stakeholders in the sustainable development of society, we quickly called the attention of our regulatory arm, State technical Committee on Engineering Regulatory Committee (ERM) who are empowered by law to ensure all Engineering works are done to standard.

“NSE Yenagoa Branch is glad to inform the general public that those fears are unfounded and that the culvert currently undergoing construction is just to allow water passage as the rains are here already and during the floods, while the actual bridge is being constructed,” the statement reads.

The statement averred that the backfilling is to enable a proper and effective foundation of the bridge.

The NSE noted that the statement became expedient owing to a series of concerns raised.
